Danilo Medina, a seasoned technocrat and close ally of President Leonel Fernandez, won elections in the Dominican Republic on Sunday, with 51 percent of the vote.
Medina beat Hipolito Mejia of the Partido de la Revolucion Dominicana by 5 percentage points, pulling away from his opponent during the last two weeks of campaigning in what was initially a very tight race.
